We will let Georgina, who instigated & runs the program, tell you in her own words:

“Very few of us could dispute that this has been a very cold, wet and windy winter. Imagine for a moment , through mostly no fault of your own, not having a secure warm home and scrambling nightly for somewhere to safely sleep. Hi, I’m Georgina and for many years Global Contact Bookshop and Patsy Griffiths has supported the Homeless Women’s Lunch Project with financial donations ( through fun-draising) so we can help women in crisis. These women are from all over greater Sydney and most are fleeing violence in the home and due to severe shortages of women’s refuges and safe houses and a very long wait for public housing, are finding themselves living in their car and sleeping rough.

As a now retired, unfunded social worker I find myself voluntarily cooking, protecting and advocating on behalf of these frequently traumatised women and constantly seeking out emergency accommodation. Every dollar donated means more fruit, vegies, treats, opal cards, vitamins, medical supplies and car maintenance. Recently I put a badly battered woman on a bus to the country where she has a friend she can stay with until she works out what is next for her – staying in Sydney was too unsafe for her. And due to ongoing covid, many previous services like food sheds, free food trucks, hiring of halls for emergency housing are not as available.

I’m presently part of a parliamentary inquiry into homelessness and I am calling for deeper, more compassionate and practical understandings of the anxiety, courage and needs of these women and the urgency of day to day support. In May and June I took great pleasure in taking some of these women to Vivid, the Biennale, Sydney’s Writers Festival and the World Press Photos – all free events and providing a cultural and fun day out followed by coffee and discussion.  I applaud these women and their amazing tenacity to create a better life for themselves and their kids.”
